Though it feels like winter weather is upon us here in the Gallatin Valley, in reality “true” winter on the calendar is still a few weeks away. Events surrounding the Christmas season begin to pick up with the turning of the final monthly calendar page to the last month of the year. With the coming of the holidays it is time to anticipate what events can be enjoyed in this festive season of the year. It may be the perfect week to finish your holiday shopping early. And, hey, if you are ready to hit the slopes, it's opening weekend at Bridger Bowl. It is fun for young and old to bring in the ski season on freshly groomed trails and a chair lift to save your legs from too much exertion. If you are looking for upcoming events that would be fun for the family consider this years 34th annual Christmas stroll in downtown Bozeman. The stroll, has been a yearly tradition since 1980, and is very well-attended even when it occurs with sub-zero temperatures. This year it will be held on Saturday, December 6^th from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be a gingerbread house contest, and you can enjoy a real life nativity scene. You can sing along to Christmas carols or grab a bite to eat from some non-profit organizations offering food at a small cost. Many of the downtown businesses keep their doors open for strollers to stop by and enjoy some shopping or a chance to talk with friends over a hot drink. There are many enjoyable elements that have shaped the stroll over the years. Some of the night's events include a hay wagon ride, an appearance of Santa Claus, and a ceremony for lighting the downtown decorations.
There are also plenty of other things to do including a December art walk on December 12th from 6 to 8 p.m. at art galleries and businesses displaying artwork located along Main Street and at the Emerson Center for Arts and Culture. These galleries will show the creations of many artists, with openings and receptions that often provide hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. The air is filled with melody as local musicians play music while art enthusiasts walk through Main Street in Downtown Bozeman. If you are in the mood for a taste of the theatrical, starting Friday, December 5th, there will be performances of the Charles Dickens holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, presented by Montana Theatre Works at The Ellen Theatre. The play runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for three weeks with three additional performances on Thursday, December 18th, Monday December 22nd and Tuesday, December 23rd. There is a cost to attend. Show time is 7:30 p.m. for all performances, with the exception of Sundays, which have a 3 p.m. start. It may be a great opportunity to invite friends and family to enjoy the show together. It may be the time of year to get away from all the bustle of the season to enjoy some family time while searching for the perfect Christmas tree. Picture a beautiful tree in your home. All it takes is an inexpensive tree tag, a little drive and some possible hiking or snowshoeing to get to that great tree. Once you have it cut down it is always fun to take it home, set it up, and decorate it with heirloom ornaments and reminders of the Christmas season. After hauling kids to the stroll or wrestling with that perfect tree, you just might want to come by for a thorough vehicle clean at Shines Autos Meticulously in 4 corners, before the new year. Are you planning on attending upcoming community events like the Christmas stroll? What event do you enjoy most? Are there any special traditions your family shares during Christmas?
