It is almost the unofficial “start of summer." Memorial day is almost upon us, and with it, an expected increase in road travel. Statistically, Memorial Day weekend has proven to be a BUSY time on the highways. It is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and is extending itself even earlier into the week ahead of the official holiday, as throngs of people kick off the anticipated "summer vacation season." Memorial Day weekend is an opportunity to get out and get going. Those participating in this unofficial road rally are an estimated 34 million, according to AAA.com, with another four million going by air and other travel means during this extended weekend. Consequently, according to CNBC, there will be 9.7 million barrels of oil a day of demand over the Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day started in remembrance of those who fought in the Civil War, and it has continued as a time spent honoring those who have paid the price of freedom in other wars since then, as well. Whether you decide to go local and enjoy that time together in our beautiful valley or hit the road, think about what we celebrate on Memorial Day, as it isn't "just another holiday." We can take time to recognize those warriors that have sacrificed so much in our armed services. It (Decoration Day) is also a chance to visit the memorials of those family members that given so much to us, personally. We pay tribute to their legacy.
